I went to beautiful SMA a couple of weeks ago after several friends and family members simultaneously started sending me real estate listings and telling me SMA would be the perfect place for me (as an artist, writer, psychic, and foodie). In researching SMA, I purchased John's book. Life got in the way and I didn't have a chance to read it until I was sitting in the Jardin myself, soaking up the sun and people-watching one morning. I flipped to the chapter on gay life in SMA (I'm a lesbian) and cried my eyes out, knowing I'd found the home of my heart. John's book is an extremely helpful and informative introduction to living in SMA as an ex-pat (and helped me quell the concerns of my well-intended relatives who think I'm crazy to move to Mexico as a single gal -in fact, I told my brother I've spent 20 years as a social worker in Oakland, California - I think I'll be ok in Mexico, and John's chapter on safety helped shape my argument that I'm likely safer in SMA than here in Oakland!). The chapters on health care, the dog culture (oh my there is a real dog culture there that one needs to be aware of!), festivals (which are continual), and the arts scene were particularly helpful, as well as all the on-line resources he provided. While in SMA I shopped houses and now have my California house on the market and am preparing to move to SMA's San Antonio district by October. Like all his nonfiction about Mexico, it is thoughtful, carefully researched and helpful for anyone considering a visit or a longer time down here. John is a superb interviewer, eliciting insights from his subjects that they themselves were not initially aware of. He covers just about everything one would want to know about living here, from the real estate scene to the Mexican bureaucracies, health care, pet ownership and so on. It gives the best picture of our lives down here of anything I have yet read, but is by no means dry or boring. John articulates very well the appeal of living down here, something I often have a problem doing.The appendix of the book has many useful websites with additional information for those wanting to extend their searches.It would be a wonderful present to all those friends who have been astonished at our move down here, explaining much about the attraction of this extraordinary place.
